There is little information on the Red Wattle Breed in books or on the internet. There has been discussion that they were brought here in the mid 1800’s through the Gulf of Mexico. They have Texas ancestry going back to the 20thcentury.
The Livestock Conservancy started a purebred registry in the 1980’s and there were only 272 reported offspring registered in 1990. Since then, the Red Wattle Association was founded in 2001 to support the Livestock Conservancy with roughly 200 purebred registries a year.
Red Wattle are known for their unique appearance of wattles on both sides of their head. As of today, it is a mystery as to what the function of the wattle is. Red Wattle hogs’ range in colors from red to black and some strawberry blonde. Some might even have spots on their bellies. Some have short straight hair and some medium length wavy hair. Their face is slim with a curved-up snout and upright ears that droop at the tips. Fully grown Red Wattles can grow to an average of 700 pounds but can get much larger, up to 1,200 pounds.
This breed is known for being adaptable and hardy. They are active foragers and live in many different climates. This with combination of their mild temperament makes them good for being pasture raised. They have great mothering instincts and can farrow up to 12 piglets a litter.
Being pasture raised and foraging makes their meat well marbled. Comments have even been made that it looks similar to that of beef.
Our hogs, you see here at Heritage Oregon Grown Farms and Feed in Dayton, Oregon are pasture raised, humanely treated, and well cared for.
